Sculptures
Material: soapstone on alabaster.
Style: Contemporary Art

sculpture: Oneness by Juliette van Bavel My love for stone I discovered while studying at the academy, during my second year.
Though quite some materials have my interest, as soon as I touched stone, I felt it would always be special to me. So it became my "core material"

In the gallery you see pictures of the series: "God and men" (some examples on this page)
In this series I combine my interest in ethnology and religion as well as spirituality and scriptures. Experiences from life, translated into shapes and signs like:
Lotus, Hinduism, a Greek amphora, Celtic elves, angels, astrological signs. You see an egyptian priestess with a secret message in hieroglyphs on the back, the ark filled with only people..

Sculpture: Eternity by Juliette van Bavel
The complete series "God and men" contains 12 statues.

The supporting stones:
To not have to use the traditional iron pin and square socle, I went on a quest to search for a different, more satisfying solution. I found it.

Every supporting stone is cut and filed till the top stone fits exactly in it The result is a far more natural look. The top and supporting stones melt into one image and strengthen the image as a whole.

It accentuates the opposition of raw and polished materials. I love the natural shape and texture of stone, so I leave parts unprocessed wherever possible. In the end, who is a better sculptor then Mother Nature herself?
